Located on the edge of the Anse la Raie lagoon on Mauritius’ north coast, Lagoon Attitude is an eco-conscious resort offering a tranquil escape with a good amount of luxury and a great staff team. It’s about an hour from the airport. From its sustainability efforts to its idyllic beachfront location, this hotel, for us, did a great job of bridging the gap between luxury and environmental responsibility. We stayed in a room that opened directly onto the soft sands, allowing us to step out each morning and wander in to a hammock or directly towards the sea and the sound of the waves. Here’s a detailed account of our stay and why we’d go back Lagoon Attitude. You can find out what else we got up to in Mauritius here.
Eco-Conscious Luxury
The first thing to say is that Lagoon Attitude stands out for its commitment to sustainability. The hotel has held the Travelife Gold certification since 2017 and continues to champion responsible tourism. Initiatives such as the blue nets programme for beach litter collection, zero single-use plastic policy, and upcycling workshops reflect the resort’s dedication to preserving Mauritius’ natural beauty.
The on-site Marine Discovery Centre was actually a fascinating highlight. It’s an educational hub where marine biologists share insights into marine conservation. It didn’t take a huge amount out of your day but it did mean your learnt something. There are also other nods to conservation around the hotel – e.g. a fishing line ‘wall’ where guests can tie fishing line recovered from the sea to support conservation efforts, and the hotel also supports local entrepreneurs and businesses on the site itself. None of it is in your face though and you can engage as much or as little as you want.
Rooms and Facilities
Our beachfront room was simply breathtaking. Designed with natural materials and soft, earthy tones, it reflected the resort’s connection to nature. The layout was spacious enough without being massive, with a comfortable bed, and wardrobes etc with enough room to unpack two large suitcases. However, direct access to the beach was the show stopper and waking up to the sound of the lagoon was an unforgettable experience. Note – you need to ask for one of these rooms if you want one, as there are other rooms positioned around a large garden area (which also look lovely!).
The resort boasts three swimming pools, including one infinity pool with mesmerising lagoon views. We made the most of the kayaking opportunities, enjoyed a serene sunset catamaran tour, but missed the opportunity to join a marine biologist on a glass-bottom boat excursion, as we were away from the hotel. For those seeking active pursuits, there’s a gym, tennis, padel, and even windsurfing lessons.
For relaxation, the Spa POZ was a highlight. Committed to sustainability, the spa uses 100% natural Mauritian products. Knowing that 5% of any product purchase goes to the Attitude Foundation is also a nice touch.
Restaurants
We were all-inclusive and for AI guests, Lagoon Attitude offers a fantastic Dine-Around experience, allowing you to explore various cuisines across its restaurants. We were there for ten days and never really got bored, which can be a problem at all-inclusives, so it’s great to have the diversity. Here’s a rough breakdown of the dining options:
Bénitier: The Main Restaurant
Bénitier, the hotel’s main restaurant, quickly became our go-to spot for hearty breakfasts and themed evening buffets. The spacious dining area, with its exposed beams and large windows opening onto a tropical garden, created a light and airy ambiance.
Themed Nights: Each evening offered a different culinary adventure. The Mauritian Night introduced us to local dishes such as rougaille (a rich tomato-based stew) and gateaux piments (spicy lentil fritters). The Lagoon Gala Dinner on Wednesday was a standout, featuring a seafood spread that included freshly grilled fish.
Breakfast: We enjoyed a lavish buffet with everything from tropical fruits and freshly baked pastries to omelette stations and cold meats – the usual suspects to some extent but there’s a good selection.
Coral: The Seafood and Mediterranean Restaurant
Set under a thatched roof with natural wooden accents and recycled materials, Coral offered a rustic yet elegant setting. Specialising in seafood with Mediterranean flair, it was perfect for a romantic dinner.
Atmosphere: The decor, featuring rattan woven like fishermen’s nets, paid homage to traditional Mauritian fishing culture. The intimate, candlelit setting enhanced the dining experience.
Menu Highlights: Mauritian Salad – Fried Chicken fillet, Pineapple, Avocado, Cherry tomato, Coconut, Spicy pecan nut, Honey and mustard vinaigrette. Also, seared tuna for main, and a really lovely trio of chocolate desserts.
Lemongrass: A Taste of Asia
Lemongrass brought the flavours of the Far East to Mauritius, with a menu inspired by Japanese, Indonesian, and Thai cuisines. The restaurant’s striking wrought-iron furniture and a vibrant mural by local artist Evan Sohun added a modern, artistic vibe.
Experience: Each dish was beautifully plated, showcasing the finesse of Asian culinary traditions. Reservations were required, and it was dinner only – but the cosy atmosphere made dining here feel special.
Star Dishes: Beef tataki, grape salad and lemograss dressing. The grape salad sounded a bit weird but it works, promise! There was also a sesame ice cream flavoured with Sayaka Macha (tea flavours!)
Kot Nou: Traditional Mauritian Tapas
For a truly authentic experience, Kot Nou was the place to be. The name, meaning “Our Home,” perfectly captured the warm, inviting atmosphere. The restaurant was decorated in traditional Mauritian style, with colourful textiles and rustic furnishings.
Cultural Flavour: Unapologetically Mauritian cuisine.
Tapas-Style Menu: We sampled small plates of a range of things, including a trio dish of Fish vindaloo, Octopus salad and Smoked Marlin roulade filled with bitter gourd vindaloo – this was a bit much for Kirsty but Elliot enjoyed! There is also a Duck stew Mauritian-style which was incredible!
Lobster Night: Once a week, Kot Nou hosts a special lobster dinner (at an additional cost) – we never actually did this as we were away from the hotel but the idea sounds amazing!
Taba-J: The Street Food Truck
Under the shade of a century-old banyan tree, Taba-J offered a relaxed, outdoor dining experience. This charming food truck served authentic Mauritian street food, capturing the vibrant flavours of local markets.
Lunchtime Treats: In the late afternoon, we snacked on sweet local treats like gateaux coco (coconut cakes) and fresh samosas. The relaxed vibe and authentic flavours made this one of our favourite spots. Dholl puris (flatbreads filled with curried yellow split peas) and faratas (flaky flatbreads) paired with a variety of curries were amazing – we popped back here a lot!
If nothing else, the setting of the place was just so amazing. Sitting under a banyan tree, eating curry and bread and drinking cold beer is difficult to beat! Check out the picture below.
Activities and Experiences
Beyond the hotel’s facilities, Lagoon Attitude offers unique experiences to immerse guests in the natural and cultural beauty of Mauritius:
- Kayaking and Snorkelling: We explored via kayaking and went round the coast a little bit, the guys who run the rental place are very chill – the kayak rental is free (you just need to put your name down) and they kind of just leave you to it. You could also rent snorkels but we had our own to go along the snorkelling trail.
- Sunset Catamaran Tour: Sailing into the Indian Ocean to watch the sunset was magical, with the sky painted in hues of orange and pink. Absolute must do. There was a small addtional charge, but pay it. They also give out ‘jungle juice’ (this stuff is everywhere on Mauritius, and it like a very strong punch-type alcohol!) so the journey back becomes a bit of a party!
- There’s a much longer list of stuff to do, some of which we mentioned aboe – tennis, padle, volleyball, and you can also support the staff in their conservation efforts if you’re that way inclinded.
Stray Animal Welfare
During our stay, we noticed a few stray dogs and cats around the property, which is a common concern across Mauritius. For us, far from being an issue, we found the hotel’s approach inspiring – though we understand that for some people thus would be a bit of a deal breaker. To make it clear though, we didn’t see any issues with dog mess or anything like that, and all the dogs were friendly and very chilled out. Strays are a big issue in Mauritius and Lagoon Attitude collaborates with local NGOs to provide medical care, vaccinations, and sterilisation for these animals. The hotel even facilitates adoptions and offers guests the opportunity to become animal flight buddies, helping animals find homes abroad. The friendliness of the dogs added a unique charm to our stay, and we greatly admired the hotel’s commitment to their welfare.
Location and Accessibility
Situated just 10 minutes from Grand Baie and 8 minutes from Cap Malheureux, Lagoon Attitude is ideally located for exploring northern Mauritius. The capital, Port Louis, is a 25-minute drive away, and the airport is approximately 75 minutes by car.
Final Thoughts
Lagoon Attitude is a really solid hotel; it’s a destination that has enough luxury and combines it with sustainability and authentic Mauritian hospitality. It’s officially a four star, and it felt about that to us. Whether relaxing in our beachfront room, kayaking around the coast, or enjoying a gourmet meal under the stars, every moment was unforgettable. The resort’s outward commitment to preserving its environment and supporting the local community sets it apart as a truly eco-conscious haven and for us that really added something – we’re no eco-warriors, but we not arrogant enough to ignore the fact that flying all over the world has no downsides, so any hotel that is doing it’s bit is great.
We left with incredible memories and a deeper appreciation for the island of Mauritius and we would come back to Lagoon Attitude, and would look at other hotels in the group.
