Located at 6 Rue Jean Jacques Rousseau in the heart of Nantes, Maison Bagarre offers an enjoyable mix of relaxed sophistication and modern design. We stayed just round the corner at Maisons du Monde Hôtel & Suites.
We were seated upstairs in a mezzanine area, which had a bright and airy atmosphere, with sleek, contemporary decor that perfectly complemented the lively energy of the restaurant. It’s a place where you can enjoy high-quality dining without the formality that often comes with it, and it was busy when we visited.
We chose the five-course degustation menu, where the chef selects the dishes. The menu includes two starters, two mains, and a dessert, and it really felt like the chef was using the best of Nantes amazing produce. The menu we had included mussels paired with pickled cauliflower—a delightful combination of fresh seafood and a zesty, slightly tangy element that worked wonderfully together.
We also had hake, served with a smooth sweetcorn purée, perfectly cooked—flaky and light, with the sweetness of the corn enhancing the delicate fish. As well, duck, beautifully executed with a rich, split sauce that complemented its tenderness. The dish also featured an unexpected but fun touch—popcorn—along with a creamy potato base, which added both texture and depth to the dish.
All in all the food was really good, really inventive in terms of flavour and texture combinations and certainly somewhere we’d recommend.
We also opted for the wine pairing, and the sommelier did an excellent job explaining each selection and how it matched the flavors of the courses. The four wines chosen for the flight were expertly paired, and the explanations added an extra layer of enjoyment to the meal.
At 55 euros for the tasting menu and 32 euros for the wine flight, Maison Bagarre offers great value for the quality of the food and the experience, especially considering its central location in a lively part of Nantes.
One point to note is that – like many places – the set menu requires that everyone at the table orders the same, so it may not be ideal for those with dietary restrictions, but for those who can enjoy it, the experience is well worth it. With outstanding food, expert wine pairings, and a vibrant atmosphere, Maison Bagarre is definitely a top choice for anyone looking to enjoy excellent French cuisine in Nantes. Highly recommended!
