Nantes, a vibrant city on the Loire River in western France, might not always be at the top of most people’s travel lists, but we’re here to tell you—this place should definitely be on your radar. We spent an unforgettable weekend in Nantes and, honestly, two nights wasn’t nearly enough to soak in all the amazing sights and experiences this city has to offer. Whether you’re a history buff, art lover, or someone who just enjoys a laid-back weekend getaway, Nantes will not disappoint.
We flew from Manchester on Friday, arriving in Nantes just in the morning to kick off our adventure. And let us tell you—this city immediately won us over with its charm, quirky atmosphere, and a perfect blend of culture, history, and modern flair.
Staying in Style at Maisons du Monde Hôtel & Suites
We checked into Maisons du Monde Hôtel & Suites, and honestly, it felt like stepping into a Pinterest board. It’s modern, chic, and super comfortable—just what you need after a day of exploring. Located in the heart of the city, it was the perfect base to see all the sights, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and cafes within walking distance. We were especially lucky because Passage Pommeraye, a beautiful 19th-century shopping arcade, was literally just around the corner.
Les Machines de l’Île: A Steampunk Dream
One of the first things we did after dropping our bags was head to Les Machines de l’Île. This is a surreal, almost dream-like place where art, nature, and machinery come together in the form of giant mechanical animals and fantastic creatures. Picture this: a 12-meter-tall mechanical elephant that roams around, spraying water from its trunk and even allowing you to climb aboard for a ride. If you’re into quirky art or just enjoy feeling like a kid again, this is a must-see. It was like stepping into a steampunk version of Alice in Wonderland, and we loved every second of it.
When hunger struck later that evening, we headed to Maison Bagarre, and let us tell you—it was superb. The atmosphere was lively, the staff were friendly, and the food was delicious. We indulged in a mix of French bistro classics and fresh seafood, accompanied by a bottle of crisp white wine. The meal was the perfect combination of comfort and creativity, and we left completely satisfied.
Wandering Through Nantes’ Beautiful Green Spaces
The next day, we wanted a more relaxing vibe, so we spent the morning exploring the Botanical Garden. It’s a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city with lush greenery, colorful flowers, and tranquil ponds. We wandered for hours, taking in the sights and sounds (and of course, snapping a few Instagram-worthy photos along the way). It was the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Afterwards, we followed the Ligne Verte—the green line that guides you through a self-guided walking tour of Nantes. It’s basically a scenic path that takes you from one gorgeous spot to the next, connecting key landmarks and green spaces. It was a great way to get our bearings and really soak in the beauty of the city.
Sights, History, and Stunning Architecture
No trip to Nantes would be complete without checking out some of its most iconic historical sites. We visited Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul, an awe-inspiring Gothic cathedral with stunning stained-glass windows and intricate carvings. It’s one of the most important landmarks in the city and absolutely worth the visit.
We also took some time to reflect at the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery, which is a deeply moving tribute to Nantes’ role in the transatlantic slave trade. It’s hard not to feel emotional as you walk through the memorial, and it’s a powerful reminder of the city’s complex history.
Lunch, Drinks, and a Drag Queen Extravaganza
For lunch, we decided to unwind with some drinks at the Little Atlantique Brewery. What a vibe! When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised to find that there was an LGBTQIA+ music event taking place, complete with fabulous drag queens performing! The energy was contagious, and we ended up dancing the night away in one of the most welcoming and fun atmospheres we’ve ever experienced. If you’re into quirky nightlife, this is the spot for you.
Place Royale and Le Voyage à Nantes
The next morning, we took a stroll around Place Royale, one of the main squares in Nantes. It’s a beautiful space with statues, fountains, and surrounding shops. We grabbed a coffee at a nearby café and watched the city come to life as locals and tourists alike soaked up the Sunday sun.
We also spent some time checking out Le Voyage à Nantes, a unique cultural trail that leads you through the city’s contemporary art installations, historic sites, and quirky landmarks. From murals to sculptures, there’s always something interesting to discover around every corner. It’s a great way to explore Nantes’ vibrant art scene.
Final Thoughts: A City of Surprises
After two action-packed days, we were sad to say goodbye to Nantes. The city completely exceeded our expectations and proved to be the perfect destination for a short getaway. It’s a place where history meets modern creativity, and where every corner holds something surprising. Whether you’re exploring the whimsical machines of the island, wandering through lush gardens, or enjoying an impromptu drag show, there’s never a dull moment.
If you’re looking for a European city that’s a little off the beaten path but still brimming with charm, culture, and great food, Nantes should be at the top of your list. We can’t wait to go back and explore more of what this hidden gem has to offer.
Until next time, Nantes! We’ll be back soon!
